Week 4 - Show Me What You Learned

This is what I have learned with my tutorials that I am so excited to use for my media project. I have learned to compile 4 programs from Apple together. I really like iPhoto and found so many tools for it. I learned to tag my photos and it made it easy for me to find a picture instead of searching through so many of my photos to find just a certain picture. That is the main thing that has helped me tremendously. Then I moved to GarageBand and it was so much fun really getting to play with it. I found an great tutorial that will help me with my media project. I like to create music so I am learning all the things music when it comes to GarageBand. I do like podcasting but my life is a party and it is so much fun making music for my parties now and even having my friends make songs and rap plus sing. Nobody can go through life without having a digital video camera or you are not cool at all. But how can you shoot a great film with angles and put it on your computer and not make it look like an amateur shoot that film. That's why Apple created iMovie. iMovie has a lot of tricks that I would have never thought about and makes you learn so much about the things that can help you out. You can change your film to be black and white, sepia, etc. There are so many effects that you can do to make your project shine. So, you can import the photos from iphoto and music from GarageBand to iMovie to help with that film that you are creating. The last thing is how can you share it with your friends and send it out to the world. Well iMovie does allow you to email it or send it through YouTube but sometimes you want things to be very professional that's when you use iDVD. Yep, Apple has made it to where you can send that film you created to iDVD and make a DVD for your friends and family. This is a really neat program because then you are allowed to make chapters for whatever you want. It is a little project that your friends would never know that really didn't take you that long to do. With 4 programs you have created a DVD that you can share with friends for a long time. This is what I have learned and I can't wait to create a DVD for my media project to send to my administrators and the heads of the districts.

Enjoy the film of what I have learned and I really liked the class.

Thanks to Apple Products!!

Week 4 - Comment to Melissa's Blog

It is the end of the road and my last comment to a fellow classmates blog. So here it is:
All I can say is that I bow to you!! I bet that book would be a tremendous help with the thesis but I decided to send it to my friend. She loves reading things and editing it so that is up her alley. Let me know if that book is any help because I may have my students look into using that when we have to write lab papers. I can help you with Ning anytime that you would like and have an teachers opinion about it too. We had to use it when I worked with Best Buy to help with their program to get teachers and students involved in their stores and maybe building stores that are catered to teachers.

A Note from the Editor
This week I’ve had to remain focused and also determined to finish my final project, blogs, comments, readings, and finally the THESIS. I’m currently in the process of editing my thesis before I submit tomorrow, and I do feel confident about what I’ve drafted up so far. Last Friday, I purchased a book called Edit Yourself by Bruce Ross-Larson at Barnes and Noble. (I really could spend a whole weekend there...don’t try me.) I’ve found it to be very resourceful when it comes to word choice; of course I plan to use it in my Language Arts class as well.

What I’m not feeling confident about is our thesis media project. I know what I want to do, but I don’t know how or what to use. If you have any suggestions on what I should use to design an online professional development community I’d greatly appreciate it. These past few weeks I’ve played with Sharepoint, Ning, and Moodle, but I still need to find the ins and outs off all.

Best of Luck finishing up the Thesis, All!

Week 4 - The Art of Possbility

This book has helped me to take a step back and look at my life. I hope that now I can be a better friend, daughter, and teacher. I believe that the book has given a new prospective on life and I look at things differently. I really do like this book and think that more people do need to read it in order to see what they can change about the way they look at life. That is want Zander wants us to do. He uses old principles to get us to think about things in a different way. The last chapters of the book were really good. I understand that you want us to use the end of the book to explain about each chapter but I always find a chapter that will have more impact on my life than others do.

I will focus on the chapter Lighting a Spark. Once school begins I do the same mundane thing every single day. I figure out what I am going to teach and repeat it for all the classes and then just keep doing it over and over again. There is never any change in my life. I read the chapter about lighting a spark and it made me think about my life. I need to set a fire to my life in order for my students to have a spark in theirs. I can't expect a whole lot from them when I am not doing the same thing. I think that sometimes we get caught up in life and forget to put excitement in our lives. I have realized that I will be lighting a spark to everything that I do in my life. This will allow the people in my life to do the same. If you start doing something in your life then its like an domino effect and others will take it on. So, I say from this day on I will not only light a spark in my life but in others also.

Week 4 - Stickam to Them

Today was the last time to be in the class and it bitter sweet. I have learned so much about copyright and kind of wonder what we will learn when it comes to teacher inservice what we will be learning this year. That's right I said teacher inservice at my school district each year we have to go through training over the new and old copyright laws. We have to make sure that our students follow them so that there is not an issue for the district or state. In our final discussion with the group we discussed about the Creative Commons. So what exactly is creative commons and do you know if you are using it the right way. Well first lets look at what creative commons is. It is an non-profit that gives alternative to full copyright. It allows people to take other people's pictures and use them. I really did learn a lot from the creative commons talk because I don't know if this is something that we will be discussing this year at inservice but I did forward the information to my principal. I want to say thanks for teaching so much during this class and helping me to have a better understanding on things that can help me in the future. I have really enjoyed the class.

Week 4 - Talk With Kathy Craven

When I first heard that I would need to shoot a documentary for my media project I just froze. I thought there is no way I can do this at all and I don't have the skill for this but then I remembered that we have some of the best faculty at Full Sail. I knew the person to ask would have to be Kathy Craven. She really helped me to look at film in a different light and I really enjoyed her class. I was a bit nervous about asking her about what to do because I don't have a plan at all, but she took my thesis topic and idea and just came up with the idea. I want to share with you our conversation via iChat:
AIM IM with Kathy Craven 7/27/09 10:40 AM
hello ms craven it is aletha w and for my media project that is coming up I want to shot a documentary
i would love to get some ideas from you on how to do this the best way
Hi there!
sure i'd be glad to help
do you have something you'd like me to look at or are you starting from scratch
starting from scratch with an idea right now
what is your idea?

i talked to dr. bebdard and my thesis is virtual science labs for low ses but she wants me to get interviews from students, teachers, administrators and show how they are using the technology but the end will be me presenting the issue to my superintendent of schools
so you need to think about how to set up interviews, etc.
yes because it sounds like will be hard
have you thought about interspersing live action (video) interviews with interviews of students in their virtual world would that work?
no that is a great idea
the first think you need to think about is making a list of who you need to interview and a list of questions that you need them to address. you want to get them to give complete answers. For example, every time you begin an interview tell them: please answer in complete answers. for example if i ask you what your favorite color is say, "my favorite color is green" not "green". does that make sense?
So get them to answer in complete sentences and think about how they could be linked. like what one person is saying can flow right into what another person is saying so that it is almost a continuing conversation. this would be neat if you could go from live video person to avatar. also remember to shoot broll. (do you remember about broll?)

yes that makes a lot of sense
no i don't
about lighting. i know you do not have a lot of equipment but think about some intereting, pretty places and use natural light as much as possible. do not put someone in front of lit window. they will get washed out
broll...
ok
sorry yes i do remember broll
ok
i am really enjoying all the ideas thanks so much
i will send you video if you need help. but it is important to get other objects, etc. so you can put that in the places where you need to cover video that isn't great or if you change your camera position. during the change (zoom in or out for example) you should cover it with broll or maybe footage that is an example of what they are talking about. so after the interview plan to spend a few minutes getting broll of stuff in the shot. think about the longest shot you got and get objects, etc. in that shot. with that said, be sure to get varying angles and focal lengths (wide shot, medium shot, CU shot) this will make it more interesting visually than if you just shoot a "talking head" from one perspective.
so
1. plan who you need to interview.
2. what do you need to answer? what are your questions?
3. where will you intereview
4. check out your locations ahead if possible
5. think about lighting in terms of what time of day. if you shoot outside, morning or evening is best light
do not shoot in front of a lit windwo
6. get broll at the location of the interview
7. once you go home and watch footage make notes about what they are talking about in terms of what you might want to shoot. for examples students working at computers, you can cut to that from the interview. the point is to not stay on the interview person too long so it is not boring

thanks so for the help
you are so welcome
if you have any more questions, or want me to look at your footage...i'm glad to help

Week 3 - Thesis

I must say that this week I have slack off when it came to my thesis and will be writing like a machine this upcoming week. There were so many things that were in my way to distract me. I had plenty of help from my friends but they had me really going with their weddings. I put my thesis to the back burner and really think that I will regret this in the long run. I have powerful facts and great quotes from doctors, lawyers, and teachers that I spoke to when I was at the receptions. So, maybe I didn't get rid of work all together at all. I still was thinking of school. I just really can't believe that in a few days I will be turning in a paper that I have worked on so hard and recieve constructive criticism on. I am a bit nervous about this it is like giving your child to the world and hoping that everyone likes them. As, I sit here and think that all of this I just tell myself the fun is over and now it is back to the thesis.

Week 3 - Comment to Renee

I for some reason really like reading Renee's Blog and find it very insightful.
Comment:
I know what you are you talking about and never though about looking at our Thesis or journey at Full Sail like a play. We first began this journey I would have never thought that this would go so fast. This thesis was like a thorn in my side and it is just like learning your lines. You are so tired at the start but you push yourself so that you the ending pays off. I am now seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I am just like you kind of said that it is all going to be over in just a flash. I guess once we have our last curtain call we will see that big picture but always remain friends.

Renee's Blog:
Week 3 ~ Thesis Journey
Friday, July 24, 2009

Thesis writing is so similar to acting. It is a process, that can seem painstakingly slow at times, just as learning lines or songs are in a musical. The results are oh so rewarding, though. My students this summer learned lines and songs to a mini-musical and gave a performance in eight days. If middle schoolers can do that, I can certainly write this thesis.

As I have been working on it, I have been getting more and more excited about the process and progress. And --WOW--that comes almost right out of my thesis. I am so excited to implement portions of my work this fall when school starts. I am starting to get that rejuvenated feeling. You know it--the feeling you get when you know that you are truly excited to see your students again and that you are ok with the fact that summer break is coming to an end.

Our journey is winding down and I can truly say that I am sorry to see it end.

Week 3 Reading - The Art of Possibility

It was an long week for me and getting the reading done was something that I really didn't want to do. I had two weddings to attend on the same day and major dental work that was going to happen. I as I reflect on the reading it was something that I am so excited that we had this book to read this week. As I embarked on chapter 3, I was already engrossed in the book. I was intrigued with that idea by giving an student an "A". I really thought that Zander was out of his mind just a little bit and figured that this would never work out. Then I kept reading and it really touched me what his students had to say. We as educators try to seperate our students by the ones that are smart and the ones that just don't care. This allows for all the students to care and lets them know that we care for them too. We can enrich their lives as they can enrich ours. There will be better collaboration in the classroom, students will want to work and students will come out with self confidence. I am going to try give this a try and tell my students they all have an "A" on the first day of school. They must work hard to keep the "A" and at the end of the year tell me the reason why they get to keep the "A". I think that I will be surprised with the responses that I will recieve. I am really liking this book and must keep on reading.

Week 3 - Garageband Beats

I wanted to make great beats for media project. I found this tutorial that will help me out. I think that it will do the trick since I like to have fun and throw all the instruments on to my music files. I really like the idea of having a solo and it was a good tutorial. I am trucking on with this thesis and hoping that my media project will be even better. I hope that you like the tutorial.

Week 2 Comment

I was searching different blogs and came across Deb Quinn's - My comment on her page:

I really like that way that he presented the material and that is a great way to keep a kids attention. The thing that impressed me the most was the facts that he talked about in the clip. I now know why my school never has any funding to do anything, It is hard working at a low income school and the fact that they don't use the money for education really irritates me. It really puts a hole in my budget when I have to buy all the material for my students to perform labs because my school doesn't have the budget to pay for it. Thanks for that and I can use that to help with my thesis.

What she wrote about and had on her page:

Week 2 New Media, Old Politics? Video from MIT World

Even though the video New Media, Old Politics? was primarily about politics, I found Garret LoPorto’s discussion regarding psychographics particularly interesting. The use of the internet to target specific cultural communities was something that I hadn’t really given any thought to before this video. When I am introduced to ideas such as this I feel like I have been living under a rock! LoPorto goes on to explain how the internet was and is used to reach and to organize like-minded people to create a constituency. This led me to another reason of why it is so important to teach our students through inquiry-based learning. They are bombarded daily with images and ideas through the internet and television that they need to be confident and to question what they see, hear, and read. Part of LoPorto’s discussion was centered on the need to find out the underlining belief system of a group of people so that it can be targeted. Once their belief system is discovered it can be used and manipulated to spread ideas, that benefit a certain group or political party. “If a person can identify with the idea it becomes a belief, and they pass it on because it will enhance their identity.” (LoPorto,2004)
I will be very interested to hear what your feelings are on this topic.

Week 2 - Reading - Convergence Culture

In the reading for this week it just really had an profound affect on me as a teacher. I really see myself as that person that was all bent out of shape when it came to the Harry Potter books and why are Christians reading them. I never thought of me as one of those people but I really am. As I got to the end of chapter 5, I came across a couple of lines that really were powerful to me. We don't need to be adults that teach children and they learn but rather where the children are teaching themselves. This is a problem that many teachers are facing when it comes to technology because they are scared of it but we need to allow the children to be creative. I remember this video that Dr. Ludgate showed and it has never left my mind and it deals with the same issue here. It is called Pay Attention and it telling teacher, parents, anyone that will listen how to use the technology that we have to allow the students to learn.

Week 2 - Documentary

So, for my media project I will be shooting a documentary. I will be showcasing my journey of creating a virtual lab and then students, teachers, and administrators practicing it out. I do hope it goes well with them because at the end of my film I will show me having a meeting with my Superintendent, President of the School Board, Principal, and many others. I will show them the film and present to them my idea about why we really shouldn't block every technology site at the district and how the virtual lab that I created can help the district. I know a big undertaking but someone has to do it right. I am so nervous but it will get me prepared to present my thesis to the panel at the university. So, I have been studying the proper way to shoot a documentary and found a decent clip on YouTube. I will be asking help from one of our many great professors we had Kathy Craven. I want this to be really good as a media project and make sure it doesn't look like a 9 year old could have done this. So check out the YouTube video that will help me out in the process.

Week 2 - iMovie Intro Tricks

For my media project, I will be shooting an documentary so I want to learn everything there is to know about iMovie. I have been playing around with iMovie and learning all the trick of the trade that comes with it. I have found out a lot and really excited about everything. I know that this is my new best friend. Frustration is setting in because there is so much to do in such a little time.

Week 2 - Thesis and Media Project

I have been working so hard on the thesis I forgot to blog about my progress. I am really excited about what I have come up with and the help from Dr. Bedard. I thought that I was done with all of my research till she had mention another problem to me that have in paper. That meant more research but the problem is something that people are dealing with everyday at schools. Why are schools blocking everything on the internet that can be beneficial to the learning process. I really excited about this and ready to add this to my already long title of a thesis. I think that if I can help with the problem in my district then I can achieve a lot. There are many things that people need to sit back and think about when they block websites. Its funny to me that I have been researching virtual science labs but had to look at them when I got home because my school would block those sites. I didn't think that was a porn site or anything bad for a kid to look at. We want out students to be creative and express themselves or they will just act up in class. I know this will call for more research but I am so excited to do this if it can help at least one district.

Week 1 Reading - Convergence Culture Reading

Talk about the book after you read it. That is hard for me since I am a slow reader and have to reread several times in order to understand with I have read. Time to look at the book Convergence Culture, Where Old and New Media Collide. What was my initial thoughts even before I read the book well I thought it was going to discuss the things we need to do and the things that we need to leave behind.

I must say that I am really enjoying this book and think that the author has put the his knowledge of the material to the forefront. Now, before we dive into the meaning of the book there is just one side note. That was not an introduction but instead it was a whole new chapter. Introductions have never lasted that long but what do I really know since I read Science books.

What exactly is the author, Henry Jenkins, trying to say? Well, it is something that I have talked to many teachers about that are older than me and younger. These kids have not witnessed the change in media like some of us have. In the introduction it talks about the first colored television. I was not around for that but you can see the change that is happening with our TVs. They are going from a box set to now being flat screen. I have seen the walkman go to the cd player and now how can we forget there are iPods and mp3s. Cellphones have went from a bag to now being smaller than a deck of cards and have different type of media that you can put on it.

There is no drastic change in teachers as they may interact with their students but they still teach old school. This use to be me and I would just make sure that the students got the knowledge instead of them understand the material. I notice that this is why there are so many conflicts with teacher and students in the classroom. Schools need to integrate the newly social networking like text and post to social network (blogs). Where kids use to have friends that lived down the street that they would interact with now, they have friends all over the world to network with.

I know that in my classroom, I have the students sit in their desk and really don't allow them to interact with each other. With all this that happened the traditional way of teaching often has the kids bored out of their minds. They are not being engaged. I have notice that in my class the students need to interact and engage with each other. Students like to participate and can 't learn with the traditional style of teaching. According to Jenkins, he says that we should "work on a collective intelligence" with "strengths and weakness is disorderly, undisciplined, and unruly" (Jenkins, 2006). We as teachers have to realize that this is part of the world that our students are in. They relate to the technological media and cannot relate to anything else that we put in their faces. We must fit in to their world and not force them to fit in ours.

Jenkins, goes on the say that this very thing makes the collective intelligence work. He says that it is "not the possession of knowledge", which we as teachers believe that students should have, but the "social process of acquiring it" (Jenkins, 2006). So, why is it so hard for us as educators to see this? It is because many of us are scared of the new technology and rely on the knowledge that we were taught. In order to reach the students in the classroom, they need to change a little of their own state of mind. It is time to use the things in the classroom to help the students learn. I think that once this happens then each classroom will be better. It just takes a few to show teachers that technology is not a scary thing but it is beneficial to aid in learning. Many lesson plans can be easier with the help of technology and the students will have an social process of acquiring this knowledge. We must expand our minds to be like these new consumers and get out of the dark ages.

Week 1 - Show me what you know

I can't choose which project I have enjoyed the best out of all the classes. There were two classes that were difficult for me but I really got a lot out of. The first class was Education Design and Evaluation and making an effective project/lesson plan that deals with technology was really tough. It was my first time to use iWeb, iPhoto, iMovie, and Keynote. These programs I thought were going to be very easy to use and I was really wrong about that. I am so happy for the tutorials that should me how to use them. Please check out my handy work for the time using these products.

http://web.me.com/leeleelizette/Chemitry_Project/Welcome.html

The other class was the Musical Theory & Education Applications because I am not musical talented at all. I was up nights creating beats on GarageBand and had a fear that it sounded horrible. I got help from my students and the project that I came up with, my school has adopted it in the curriculum. I was really excited to show that I can use iWeb, iMovie, GarageBand and Keynote. This project looks a lot better than the first one that I attempted to do. I am really proud of it and have learn how to incorporate all of the different medias together and you don't have to stick to just one. Here is my other masterpiece:

http://web.me.com/leeleelizette/Biology_Project/Welcome_.html

I have learned a lot in all the classes that I have taken and really can't wait till Aug. 24th when school starts to begin using them in my classroom. The students will see that you can use all of these programs to create a great project to present. I am really proud of myself and know that I am like a sponge and soak in whatever is being taught to me.

Week 1 - Thesis, Thesis, Everyday

I have been sitting here at home worried about my Thesis. It seems like it is this big scary monster that is going to take over my life. Well, it will be taking over my life to the end of the program. I am excited about all of the research that I have found that goes along with my Thesis. I am so happy for Goggle Alerts because if it was not for them I would be up on the computer till the wee hours searching for papers, podcast, etc. I haven't even stated what my Thesis is over well it deals with "What Virtual Science Lab is the Best for Low-Income Schools. Yes, it is a big topic but I believe that the media project will take much longer than the paper. I have already made my contacts for that and can't wait to jump on board and get everything done. I have been looking into Second Life because I want to build a Science Lab for my media project. I hope that my district will take this and it will help the kids learn with Technology.

Week 1 -Time to Start

I can't believe that we are halfway down with the program.  I am so excited that we are having to blog in the class because this is something that I want to incorporate in my class next year.  I think that it will be hard for me to blog 4 - 5 times a week but this will help me to stay on top of things.  My main goal is to blog everyday or at least every other day so that I can get everything done.  I hope that you will enjoy the media that I am going to put in my blog and make sure that I get the url to each and every one of you.  I am so excited about working with Scott, Mike, Melissa H. and Reene.  These are people that I have not been able to work with in a group before but I think that this will be a great group.  As for Paul, we have worked together and really are good at it.  I can't wait to learn so much in this class and just enjoy the fun with my group.
